#ACEARD CLIMATE DIALOGUE
July 26, 2019 @ 9:00 am - 5:00 pm
CLIMATE CHANGE & AGRICULTURE
“Achieving food security in the face of changing climate”
Evidence of climate change such as rising temperature and changes in precipitation is undeniably frequent in recent years with impacts already affecting ecosystems, biodiversity and people. Africa is one of the continents where the effects of climate change are being felt. With limited economic development and institutional capacity, African countries are among the most vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. The long-term impact of climate change on food and nutritional security and environmental sustainability is continuously gaining attention, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa.
Nigeria in particular depends heavily on rain-fed agriculture making food security and rural livelihoods highly vulnerable to climate impacts, such as shifts in growing seasons. Available technologies and current institutional structures seem inadequate to achieve the mitigation needed to adequately slow climate change while also meeting needed food security, livelihood and sustainable development goals
The country needs to identify actions that are science-based, utilize knowledge systems in new ways, and provide resilience for food systems and ecosystem services in agricultural landscapes despite the future uncertainty of climate change and extreme events.
These and many more will be the focus for this year’s ACEARD Climate Dialogue holding in Uyo, Nigeria with the theme “Climate change and Agriculture-achieving food security in the face of changing climate in Africa.
The aim of the Dialogue is to provide an awareness and opportunity for interaction, consolidation, and sharing experience that could inform emerging Climate Smart Agriculture for Nigeria while also seeking to mobilize actions on policies, practices and financing for food security, adaptation and mitigation.
To lead this important dialogue, a panel of discussants with both national and international experiences have been selected for the dialogue .
The ACEARD Climate Dialogue is a flagship initiative of the African Centre for Environment, Agriculture & Rural Development where policy makers, private sector, academia, farmers, civil society, media are engaged in series of discussions around climate issues, actions and how to foster low-carbon and high-growth economic development while building a climate resilient society in Africa.
